ZOP1010: Mental Toughness
Program Overview
Mental toughness is widely considered to be a key ingredient of excellence in all performance environments including business. Based on models empirically derived from professional sport, the purpose of this program is to understand mental toughness specifically in the business context, identify its characteristics and behaviours, and also the situations in which it is required. The program will also focus on how both individuals and teams can develop this desirable attribute given its relationship with resilience (coping with adversity and bouncing back from setbacks) and sustaining high performance (dealing with success and boom times).

Content
Adopting a similar conceptual framework and self-discovery methodology used in recent research in sport, participants will employ techniques designed to examine and enhance personal understanding of mental toughness, what it is and is not, when it’s required and when it is not. Participants will then explore psycho-educational and facilitative mechanisms, including coaching, designed to develop characteristics and behaviours associated with mental toughness.
Learning Outcomes
Participants attending this program will be able to:
· Understand the background literature on mental toughness
· Employ interviewing and profiling techniques designed to understand mental toughness
· Distinguish between and rank mental toughness characteristics and behaviors
· Identify situations when mental toughness is and is not required
· Adopt experiential strategies and coaching techniques that enhance mental toughness.

Sandy Gordon is a Registered Sport Psychologist (WA), Fellow member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS), Member of the APS College of Sport Psychologists (CoSP) and APS Interest Group in Coaching Psychology (IGCP). Accreditation also includes Advanced and Professional Development Executive Coaching Certificates from the Institute of Coaching and Consulting Psychology.
In business settings both overseas and in Australia Sandy’s engagements have included facilitation of emotional intelligence, mental toughness and resilience programs (Banks, Business Consulting Groups, Call Centres), creating high performance leadership cultures (Banks, Real Estate firms), high performance team work (Mining firms, Call Centres), decision-making skills (energy firm) and strategic planning (small businesses). Executive Coaching experience includes CEO/CFO/COO level individuals in both public (ABC, ATO, DoIR, DSR) and private sectors (Accountants, Banks, Builders, Financiers, Lawyers).
He has been researching mental toughness for almost 10 years and has published over 20 papers or book chapters on the topic. He is currently co-editing a book entitled Mental toughness in sport: Developments in research and theory, which is due to be published (Routledge) in 2010.
