Program Overview

Why measure impact?

How do NFPs and community organisation provide evidence that social investment is worthwhile? And how do governments and corporations justify their spending in the third sector (not-for-profits and social enterprises) and measure social impact and social value creation? This program will introduce Social Return on Investment (SROI) frameworks, providing opportunities for participants to consider the value of such investments asnd discuss ways to measure social impact and return on investment.

Designed for

The course will provide an introduction to, and overview of, social impact and social return on investment. It’s suitable for leaders and managers from the third sector/not-for-profit and social investment sectors who want to understand the scope of SROI and impact mapping, and how to apply the principles within their own organisation and to communicate with funders and government agencies. It will also provide a useful introduction to ROI principles for public and private social investors.

Content

The Focus

The program will look at best practice internationally in the measurement of social return on investment, in particularly work underway in the UK on seven principles for measuring social impact. This workshop will increase your understanding of SROI by looking at what can be learnt from the UK example and by learning the basics of impact mapping.

BHP Billiton Visiting Expert in Social Impact Jeremy Nicholls’ work has increasingly focused on finding ways for organisations to better understand and then manage the social value they create. He has co-written a number of guides to SROI and also developed the SROI Primer with London Business School. He has developed an online version of SROI and worked on many SROI analyses for private, public and third sector organisations. He is a fellow of the nef (the new economics foundation) and he co-founded the Beta Model Ltd, a business that provides on line access to reports on trends and dynamics in business size and numbers in the UK. He is the chair of FairPensions and a board member of the FRC Group.
